
Judge Freyre was appointed to the Colorado Court of Appeals in 2015. Before joining the court, she practiced as a criminal lawyer for the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office, serving as an appellate lawyer for eleven years and as a criminal trial deputy for fourteen years. Judge Freyre received her bachelor’s degree in Economics from Smith College in 1982. She worked for a bank management consulting firm from 1982-1985, and worked at Shareholder Services, Inc., the transfer agent for Oppenheimer Funds, as the Manager of Planning and Control from 1985-1988.
Judge Freyre began law school in 1987 in the evening division and attended law school full-time while working full-time at Oppenheimer Funds and later as a law clerk for a private criminal defense firm. Judge Freyre received her JD, Order of St. Ives, from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 1990 and is admitted to practice in Colorado, the Tenth Circuit Federal District Court, and the United States Supreme Court.
Judge Freyre was appointed as Deputy Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals in January 2022. She chairs the Colorado Rules of Evidence Committee, Vice-Chairs the Criminal Jury Instructions Committee, Co-Chairs the Criminal Bench Book Update Committee, and is a certified coach in the Judicial Department’s Peer-to-Peer Coaching program. Judge Freyre is the Chair of the Board of Trustees for Colorado’s Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA).
