Judge Judith K. Fitzgerald is a professor at Indiana Tech Law school, a position she accepted upon her retirement as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania, a position she held for over 25 years. She previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney. She sat by designation in the Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the District of the Virgin Islands. The judge teaches Contracts and has taught Bankruptcy, Advanced Bankruptcy Law and Secured Transactions at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law.
She is an elected member of The American Law Institute, a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, an Honorary Master of the Honorable Amy Reynolds Hay Chapter of the American Inns of Court and a member of Bankruptcy Section Executive Council of the Commercial Law League of America. The Bankruptcy Inn of Court she instituted in Western Pennsylvania has been renamed in recognition of her achievements. She has served as President and as Treasurer of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and held a seat on the board of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). She co-edits the treatise, Rutters National Bankruptcy Practice Guide,and has served as an Associate Editor of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal. For the ABI, she was instrumental in creating a law school writing competition and in establishing the Mid-Atlantic Region Annual Conference. She has served as co-chair of the Mass Tort Committee and advisor to the ABI Caribbean Conference.
She has been recognized for her service to the bench and bar by several organizations and received the prestigious Lawrence P. King award for her efforts to expand the scope of educational opportunities for bankruptcy professionals.
She is also a member of the CLLA.
