Jeralyn Baran is a Principal with Chuhak & Tecson and leads the firm’s 13-attorney Employment Group. As an employment and commercial litigation attorney, Jeralyn Baran sets priorities easily: issues that are important to her client are issues of utmost importance to her. She advocates fiercely to reach a favorable outcome—whether the client is a small business, a major corporation or an individual employee.
Representing employment issues from both sides of the table gives Jeri a finely tuned understanding of what each side is looking for and how best to proceed. If an employer is facing a difficult reduction in force, Jeri helps management evaluate options from both practical and legal perspectives. If an employee suspects a performance improvement plan is the last step before dismissal, she helps the client structure his or her circumstances for best recovery. If the issue is an employment agreement, potential discrimination, ERISA or OSHA compliance, executive compensation or any of a number of things that come up frequently in employment law, Jeri draws from more than 20 years of experience to manage the case effectively.
A first-rate litigator, she has won million-dollar verdicts in cases involving sales of goods, guarantees and other material breaches of contract. Jeri has successfully obtained injunctive relief to protect clients’ trade secrets and proprietary business information and to enforce non-compete and non-solicitation restrictive covenants. In appellate courts, she has argued persuasively before state and federal jurists on appeals involving breaches of contract, guarantees and other issues.
Not for profit and mission-based organizations are close to Jeri’s heart; she counts several among her clients, advising them on employment and operational issues or representing them in court.
With a special passion for encouraging and empowering young women, she has raised funds for Young Women’s Leadership Charter School in Chicago and volunteers regularly at her daughter’s school. As a member of the Women in TMA Committee of the Technology and Manufacturing Association, Jeri helps promote manufacturing as a worthy career choice for women and interviews candidates for the Rose Mottl Leadership in Manufacturing Award. Additionally, she is one of the founding members of Chuhak & Tecson’s Women Helping Women program.
Jeri makes it a priority to stay current on the constantly shifting arena of employment law and is especially skilled at training business managers and supervisors on topics ranging from diversity and disability issues to conducting proper workplace investigations, among others.
She has been named to the Leading Lawyers Network for three consecutive years and to Illinois Super Lawyers five times, including being named one of the 2016 Top 50 Women Lawyers in Illinois. In addition to leading the Employment practice for Chuhak & Tecson, Jeri served on the firm’s Litigation Committee, previously chaired the Operations Committee and was a member of the Management and Litigation Committees. She was also appointed the firm’s first Ombudsman.
