James is specialized in the asset and wealth management field, including the structuring, operation and investment of various types of private investment funds, commercial and personal trusts and other investment and wealth management products for various types of asset management companies (e.g., QFLP, RMB QFLP, QDLP, QFII, QDII, RMB QFII), and has formed various types of RMB and USD funds and trusts with total capital commitments in excess of RMB 150 billion equivalent. James is ranked as a leader in private funds for China by Chambers and IFLR 1000, the two most authoritative global lawyer rankings. James is a member on the Expert Review Committee of the QFLP and QDLP Pilot Programs administered by the Shanghai Financial Services Office (“SFO”) and also served as advisor to SFO on PE secondary market and other project. He also served as an expert advisor to China Private Equity Association on the creation of the national PE industry guiding principles. James is also active in foreign direct investments, private equity/venture capital investments and strategic acquisitions and is familiar with PRC and overseas capital markets transactions.
Prior to Han Kun, James worked at several major international law firms in the U.S. (New York and Chicago) and China (Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai) for over a decade. A former Partner in the New York and Shanghai offices of Greenberg Traurig, one of the largest US law firms, James was among the very few Chinese who achieved Partner status at a major international law firm in its U.S. headquarters.
James is a frequent speaker on China and international private equity conferences and is widely published as a special columnist in major finance publications such as Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, China Business News and 21st Century Business Herald. He also hosts expert blogs on the websites of Caijing Magazine, Hexun Finance and the Center for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises of the PRC Ministry of Industries and Information upon special invitation.
James received the highest score on the National College Entrance Exam out of over 80,000 students in Zhejiang province in 1992. He graduated from Peking University (LL.B. and B.A.) and Columbia Law School (J.D.), studied international and private equity taxation on the LLM (tax) program at New York University School of Law, the leading tax law program in the U.S. James is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) and also passed the Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) finance exam. James is a native Mandarin speaker and is fluent in English, German and Cantonese.
