Two issues: (1) will digital equities supplant current ownership structures for public equity shares?; and (2) as newly vetted trading platforms for digital assets have help BTC prices reach new heights, will digital asset values concentrate into the “approved” digital assets like BTC? Equity shares in enterprises appear to be a fine use case for digital assets. The public equity shares that you currently own in Apple, etc. are likely legally owned (per the issuing company’s records) by the Depository Trust Company (through its nominee Cede & Co.), which is a subsidiary of the Depository Trust & Clearance Corporation (DTCC), which in turn provides clearance, settlement, and information services for equities, bonds, mortgage-backed securities, money market instruments, OTC derivatives, and more. Will digital assets radically disrupt this system? Also, will certain digital assets whose trading in futures exchanges are approved by the SEC and CFTC blot out competitors and emerge as world currencies?
