Paula Schaefer

Professor Schaefer joined the University of Tennessee College of Law Faculty in 2008. Prior to teaching, she practiced in the area of commercial litigation at Shook, Hardy & Bacon and Bryan Cave. She teaches Business Associations, Civil Procedure, EDiscovery, Legal Profession, and Pre-Trial Litigation.

Schaefer’s scholarship considers issues of attorney ethics and fiduciary duty, particularly in an attorney’s representation of business clients. Her articles have been published in various journals including Maryland Law Review, Florida State University Law Review, Tennessee Law Review, American Business Law Journal, and Yale Law Journal Pocket Part.

Schaefer is interested in developing innovative teaching methods to prepare students for practice. She is the author of the Civil Procedure book in West’s Developing Professional Skills series and is the author of a chapter in the forthcoming Building on Best Practices: Legal Education in a Changing World. She has developed a simulation that generates thousands of documents that her students use to conduct e-discovery in her Pre-Trial Litigation and EDiscovery classes. She collaborates with Iris Data Services to provide students with a realistic experience using current technology in ediscovery.

Schaefer has received the Harold Warner Outstanding Teacher Award, the Bass, Berry & Sims Award for Outstanding Service to the Bench and Bar, and the Carden Award for Outstanding Service to the Institution. She regularly speaks on attorney ethics topics to various groups and is a contributing author to the Knoxville Bar Association’s “Schooled in Ethics” Column.
