Michael Skopets

Michael Skopets is an attorney in the International Department of Miller & Chevalier Chartered, in Washington, DC, where he focuses on international compliance and investigations, primarily relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other corruption risks, U.S. economic sanctions, anti-money laundering (AML), and export controls.

Within these areas, Michael advises clients regarding specific issues and general risks, often with respect to particular transactions or counterparties.  Michael develops global compliance strategies and policies, conducts risk assessments, performs due diligence, assists with contract drafting, and conducts training for clients and third parties.  He also conducts multinational internal investigations of fraud, corruption, and other misconduct allegations.  Michael regularly represents U.S. and foreign companies under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and other government regulators, and in World Bank administrative proceedings.  His clients include public and privately held companies, including state-controlled entities.

The global nature of Michael’s practice derives, in part, from his fluency in Russian and Spanish, which is particularly helpful with respect to issues related to Russia/CIS/FSU and Latin America.  He frequently uses both languages in his work, whether for client counseling, witness interviews, or document analysis.  Michael’s clients further benefit from his experience as a litigator representing clients in complex civil disputes in federal courts and serving as a law clerk to a federal judge.

Michael has an engineering degree and worked at a top global consulting firm and at several established and startup technology companies before entering the legal profession.  Michael is active in several civic and professional organizations and has been recognized for his pro bono work.
