A deposition is a formal pretrial examination in which a witness answers questions under oath, and the testimony is preserved in a transcript or other authorized recording. Lawyers use depositions to investigate facts, test a witness’s account, preserve admissions, and create testimony that may later matter in motions, settlement discussions, impeachment, or trial.
