About Jeffrey Schwartz

Chair of the Creditors’ Rights, Insolvency & Business Bankruptcy group, Jeff represents secured and unsecured creditors in out-of-court restructurings and business reorganizations under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. He also represents buyers and sellers of financially distressed companies and distressed debt, and advises, creditors’ committees, indenture trustees, and other parties involved in bankruptcy-related matters.

Jeff has represented clients in numerous Chapter 11 cases, restructurings and asset purchases involving a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, retail, mining, insurance, aviation, utilities, gaming, food packaging and environmental services.

Throughout his career, Jeff has been recognized locally and nationally for his legal acumen and commitment to client service. In 2004, he was named by Turnarounds & Workouts magazine as one of 12 outstanding young bankruptcy lawyers in the country. Jeff has written on a variety of bankruptcy-related topics, including asset purchases and sales, professional ethics and fees, and post-confirmation issues. His published articles include “Enforcing Security Interests and Liens on Personal Property” (2014) and “Managing Environmental Claims in Bankruptcy” for the Illinois Institute For Continuing Legal Education (2001) and “Professional Compensation: Does Bankruptcy Cost Too Much” for the American Bankruptcy Institute National Symposium Series. He also served as a contributing editor for the 1997-2001 editions of the Wiley Bankruptcy Law Update.

While in law school, Jeff served as a judicial extern for the Honorable William V. Altenberger in the Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of Illinois.
